A DEFINING MOMENT IN HISTORY
In 480 BC, a man from Trachis warned the Spartan soldier Dienekes that Persian arrows would be so numerous they'd blot out the sun. Dienekes replied:
Plutarch attributes the line to Leonidas instead — nevertheless, we will acknowledge both here. Today, the phrase is the motto of the Greek 20th Armored Division, in active military use for 2,500 years.
